Gems Market or Gems Road is a well-known commercial area in Chanthaburi, the so-called “city of gems.” The name Gems Road is referred to the main street of Si Chan Road and side streets of Soi Krachang, Wat Mai subdistrict, Mueang district. The road is considered one of the province’s most bustling business center because there are more than 120 gold, gems and precious stone shops clustering together. It can be said that this is Thailand’s biggest hub for gems trading.

Gems Market operates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 am – 15.00 pm. The price surveys are generally on Fridays, but the actual trading take place on Saturdays. Nowadays, we can still witness the gems dealing atmosphere where there are middlemen (known as “Dek Doen Ploy”) who buy gemstones from the mines and resells them to retailers or customers. Gems Market is crowded with Thai and foreign gems dealers.

Speaking of the origin, the first discovery of Chanthaburi gemstone source took place a long time ago near the mountain named Khao Ploy Waen. The exploration in the past did not rely on any fuel-consuming heavy equipment or machinery. It has been said that countless precious stones could be collected at Khao Ploy Waen just by fumbling the earth. The gemstones found there include green sapphire, topaz, star corundum and blue sapphire.

Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Traders Association is located next to K.P. Grand Hotel. The association has initiated and served as the venue for premium gems and jewelry trading since 2003.
