Kwan Phayao Palace
Phayao Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center was called “Kwan Phayao Aquatic Animal Husbandry Station 2” in the past. It was built around 1939-1941.
Situated on 1 PhahonYothin Road, on the milestone Km. 734-735, Wiang Sub-district, Muang District, Phayao Province, Phayao Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center is divided into two main parts.
In the first part, situated many buildings, including “The office Buildings”, next to it is “The Floodgates” and followed by “The Kwan Phayao Palace”. The palace consists of 3 villas. The first villa belongs to SomdejPhraSrinagarindraBoromarajajonani, the second villa, which was built in 1971, belongs to Princess GalyaniVahana of Naradhiwas, and the last villa, which was built in 1983, also belongs to SomdejPhraSrinagarindraBoromarajajonani.
Next to the Royal Residence, a very interesting aquarium, which exhibits a variety of beautiful and rare species of fish, is located. The local fishing equipments are also shown here for visitors or anyone who is interested to study. However, the highlight of the aquarium is the demonstration of the breeding process of the Mekong giant catfish. The Mekong giant catfish is the biggest freshwater fish without scales in the world. A fully grown one is 3 metres long with a weight of 250 kilograms.Phayao Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center is the first place in the world to successfully breed and raise the Mekong giant catfish in soil ponds in A.D. 2001. They were able to breed over hundreds of thousands Mekong giant catfish that time.
The next place situated in the first parts of the center is “The wastewater treatment systems and floodgates”. And the last one is “The Learning Center of King Bhumibol’s Philosophy of Economy Sufficiency”. Many activities, for example, a demonstration of how to breed and raise aquatic animal such as ornamental fish, are held in this area for visitors and those who are interested to experience and study as a guideline for their career in the future.
The second part of the center comprises “The Laboratory Building”, “The Squash Hatchery” and “The soil ponds”. They were all constructed under the Large Freshwater Fishery Project, with a total budget of around 185 million Baht. The construction started in 1991, and finished on January 10, 1993.
